RESEARCH RECORD
Sources & credits
A museum timeline is only as useful as the distinctions it preserves: proposal, foundation, construction, opening, transfer and redisplay are not synonyms.
Institutional records
Core starting points include the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Grand Egyptian Museum, and Egypt’s monuments portal. The Nubian dossier also uses UNESCO’s history of the Nubian campaign. Institutional accounts establish dates and official project sequences but are not treated as the only perspective.
Scholarly directions
For museum formation and archaeology, useful research fields include histories of the Egyptian Antiquities Service; Donald Malcolm Reid’s work on archaeology, museums and Egyptian identity; studies of Marcus Simaika and Coptic heritage; scholarship on Nubian displacement and the Aswan High Dam; architectural records for the Grand Egyptian Museum competition; and museum studies on display, nationalism and provenance.
Editorial rule
We prefer a dated primary record for a dated claim, then compare it with later scholarship. Where retrospective institutional timelines disagree, the text narrows the claim or states the distinction. Object-level provenance is never inferred from a general museum history.
